Pleasanton moved a couple of steps closer to becoming the west coast’s center for all things ice. “The Pleasanton planning commission unanimously approved development plans for a two-story, four-rink ice center located off Interstate 580”, in conjunction with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League.
“The commission’s decision at Thursday’s special meeting was part of a larger approval for development plans for a 17-acre community park and 5-acre neighborhood in the Staples Ranch development off Stoneridge Drive and just west of El Charro Road. As proposed, Staples Ranch includes a 37-acre auto mall, 46-acre senior living community and 11 acres of retail and commercial space.”
There is still more work to be done before the rinks can be built. The city council must approve it and land lease agreements with the city must be obtained. The council could vote on the facility as early as February.
Also, this Monday, half of the Pleasanton Library’s parking lot will be closed to make room for a holiday ice rink. The ice is expected to be installed Thursday or Friday. More information about the holiday ice, including hours and costs can be found here.
Both ice skating facilities add to Pleasanton’s already impressive array of recreational amenities, and enhance the city’s standing as a family friendly, kid friendly, and sports friendly community. We might be able to add “penguin friendly” if this keeps up…
