Do you like a lot of space? How about gothic architecture? Do feel peaceful when in a church? If you answered yes to these questions, then I have the perfect house for you. Overlooking Dolores Park, on Dolores Street in San Francisco is an amazing Gothic Revival church turned into a mansion.
From the :
Built in 1909 as Mission Park Congregational Church (later becoming the Norwegian Lutheran Church), and frequented by Nordic royalty among others, the church went out of commission in 2005, was snapped up two years later by businessman Siamak Akhavan, and has been given a comprehensive overhaul in order to justify its $7,490,000 price tag. (Closer analysis shows the property was on the market last year, as early as February.)
The draw here — and what will prompt you to scrutinize each and every listing photo — is how one goes about rehabbing a church as living accommodation. After all, an altar, choir loft and pulpit are hardly the usual features one anticipates dealing with in a single family home.
Space is clearly not an issue, and although the listing — which labels the property the “Castle on the Park” — does not detail square footage, there are 12-plus rooms and the idea, clearly, is to spread out and live large. There’s a very much open-plan living area, three-plus bedrooms and two-plus marble bathrooms, a library, media area, private gym, wine cellar, potentially expandable 4-6 car garage — and, naturally, a meditation area (with a residing Buddha of all things). Heck, maybe it’s time to get the easel out of the attic — the place could be made into a glorious exhibition space.
Check out the pictures . Pretty amazing.
