The story is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet but takes place in modern-day New York City. Two star-crossed lovers find themselves in sparring street gangs. The show highlights their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice in one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
The original Broadway production premiered in 1957, was nominated for five Tony Awards, and ran for 732 performances before going on tour.
